Stephen's new recording of Mompou Musica Callada is awarded a Diapason d'or. "Magisterially sensitive [...] Hough’s subtleties are never-ending. Through minute gradations of dynamics or the fragile sculpting of a phrase, the sparest and simplest of these pieces assume a rare beauty" - The Times. A review in Mail on Sunday (PDF). A review in the Financial Times (PDF). In Danish, a review in Politiken (PDF)
A recording of Stephen's 1st String Quartet (Les Six Rencontres) played by the Takacs Quartet has been released on Hyperion.
"Harking back to the pungent and insouciant spirit associated with composing group Les Six, Hough's creation is an immediate winner [...] a magical album" The Times
"The ‘surprise’ item is Stephen Hough’s First String Quartet. In six short movements, it harks back to Les Six whose music, says Hough, ‘evokes a flavour rather than a style’, namely ‘the rough and tumble of daily human life’. What he calls ‘Stravinskyan spikes’, both rhythmic and harmonic, lace textures that are complex but never abstruse or overbearing, often utterly delightful, in a language that references tonality obliquely. Above all, Hough’s is an unmistakably individual and convincing voice." BBC Music Magazine
